Abstract The field data of taxis collected from a certain area in China shows that the main failure mode of the cylindrical shock absorber (CSA) is oil leakage because of the large vertical and lateral force of the area. Therefore, it is necessary to simulate the actual service condition by the bench test and study the fatigue of the CSA. This paper proposes a new compilation method of load spectrum for CSA durability test. Firstly, the road spectrum is collected by a test taxi. Secondly, the vertical load spectrum is compiled by high frequency (HF) load spectrum being superposed on low frequency (LF) load spectrum. The half-power bandwidth method is employed to determine the frequency of the LF load spectrum. And the frequency of the HF load spectrum is obtained based on maximum line velocity principle. Then the loading cycles and amplitudes of the LF load spectrum and the HF load spectrum are determined by using the rain-flow counting method. Thirdly, lateral force is determined and the equivalent relationship of compiled load spectrum and road load spectrum is calculated according to the pseudo-damage theory. Finally, the durability test is carried out to verify the compilation method of load spectrum.
