Abstract The four hydraulic cyliners in the propulsion unit of a tunnel boring machine experience different load histories during operation, and the four load histories must be correlative in some way. Therefore, as the constitutive components in a series system, the failures of the every cyclinders are not independent. This paper presents the technique to estimate system reliability by means of multi-variate discrete model. With cylinder load histories obtained from different tunnel boring machine, the propulsion unit reliability can be estimated and the effects of cylinder property degradation, the uncertainty of load environment and the cylinder failure dependence can be reflected.
