Abstract Recently, a replication buffering relay method has been widely used in preparation for loss of data and out of service state. The server system with the method consists of a backup site and a buffering relay unit stand by the alert when the main site breaks down. The replication buffering relay method is able to speed up the response time and smooth communication load. But when the main site breaks down, the waste of costs for accessing the data to the buffering relay unit has been pointed out [2]. In this paper, we consider the problem of reliability in server system using hybrid replication method combined with the replication buffering relay and the synchronous replication. We formulate a stochastic model of a server system with hybrid replication method and derive expected numbers of the replication and of updated data in buffering relay unit. Further, we calculate the expected cost and discuss an optimal replication interval to minimize it. Finally, numerical examples are given.
