Abstract In order to ensure data security, plans of data back- ups are usually set up at some planned times. We suppose that backups are implemented at a number N of data updates, at a planned time T, or at the rst update over time T, under respective non-failure and failure states for a database system. Using the theory of renewal processes, we obtain the expected cost rates for backups, and optimum solutions to minimize the expected cost rates are obtained.
