Abstract In this paper, we propose a general analyzing framework for optimizing preventive replacement models in discrete time. We formulate the discrete time framework by replacement option priority and characterize the optimal preventive replacement policies minimizing the associated expected cost in steady state. Then, we reformulate the several important discrete time preventive replacement models, including age replacement models, minimal repair models and block replacement models, under this framework.
