Abstract | This paper proposes two maintenance models which working and resting periods, and discusses their optimal resting period. We consider a unit which might has some failures in a working period. The failures are repaired in the resting period, and the repair times are given as random variables. If the repair time exceeds the resting period, then penalty cost for the excess time occurs. After the resting period or the repair whichever occurs last, the unit operates again and enters working period. We describe the time interval from starting working period to completing resting period as one cycle. We treat two models: (i) Model 1: There is only one failure. (ii) Model 2: There are some failures in the working period, and so they might take time to repair the unit larger than those of Model 1. We consider the loss cost of resting period, and excess time of resting period. We obtain the expected cost rate and discuss analytically optimal resting periods which minimize the expected cost rates.
