Abstract | The advent of autonomous navigation systems has revolutionized maritime transportation, offering unparalleled efficiency and capabilities. As these systems become integral to the maritime landscape, ensuring their reliability is paramount. The importance of risk assessment, coupled with the application of Decision Support Systems (DSS), emerges as a crucial aspect in this context. This work of research discusses the important role played by autonomous navigation systems, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive risk assessment approach. The integration of a DSS proves instrumental in deciphering complex data sets associated with potential failure modes, expediting identification, and enabling nuanced understanding. In response to this, a risk assessment framework is introduced, aiming to provide a flexible prioritization of failure modes. This framework is applied to enhance the safety and reliability of autonomous navigation systems with the goal of facilitating a proactive approach to risk mitigation. By combining advanced technologies and strategic prioritization, the risk assessment framework offers a robust foundation for addressing challenges in risk assessment procedures within the dynamic context of autonomous maritime navigation.
