Abstract | Quality characteristics involving asymmetric tolerances occur in many manufacturing processes. Generalized Taguchi capability index C"pm has been proposed to measure manufacturing performance with asymmetric tolerances. Most investigations on this index focus on samples under the assumption of normal distribution. In this study, a natural estimator of C"pm is considered based on subsamples. The limiting distribution and related large-sample properties of the considered estimator are explored under general populations with a fourth central moment. This study thus derives an approximate (1−α )100% confidence interval of C"pm . However, collected data are often imprecise. To this end, we derive a triangularshaped fuzzy number for Ĉ"pm by placing a series of confidence intervals, and employ it to develop fuzzy testing in determining whether or not the process is capable. An illustrative example is provided to demonstrate how the proposed procedure may be applied to assessments of process capability.
