Abstract Two policies of incremental and differencial backup policies have been actually used for a database system. These optimal policies with time T were theoretically discussed [1-4], applying, the cumlative damage model to them [5]. Recently, several new maintenance policies for the cumulative damage model were proposed [6,7]. This paper applies such results to two backup policies, where a full backup is made at update N. Two expected costs of incremental and differencial backup policies are obtained, and optimal policies to minimize them are compared and analytically derived. Furthermore, backup overtime policies in which a full backup is made at the next update over time T are proposed.
