Abstract Inkjet printers are nowadays the most commonly used type of printers, and the permanence of inkjet printing has always been an issue ever since its invention. Previous research has focused on testing inkjet prints under different environmental conditions and recording the density loss and/or color change of the prints. In this paper, a degradation model based on halftone printing technique is developed to predict the ink loss of color inkjet prints over time. The initial ink amount is estimated from the spectral information of the print. The faded color of the print can be predicted based on the remaining ink amount. In addition, we provide a new approach for modeling the catalytic fading between inks.
