Abstract A software hazard rate model is known as one of the important and useful mathematical models for describing the software failure-occurrence phenomenon and conducting quantitative software reliability assessment. Recently, software hazard rate models with effect of change-point were proposed for improving the accuracy of software reliability assessment. This paper discusses an optimal release problem by using the hazard rate-based change-point model and derives an optimal policy for estimating optimal shipping time in terms of the cost criterion. Finally, we show an example of application of the derived optimal release policy by using actual data.
