Abstract Age replacement policies are fundamental to maintenance theory. This paper summarizes recent interesting topics and adds new discussions related to age replacement policies: First, optimization problems of minimizing the expected cost subject to the availability and maximizing the availability subject to the expected cost are proposed. Next, age replacement policies for random replacement and exponential failure time are discussed. This would explore the established theory such that the unit with exponential failure times should be replaced only at failure and an optimal replacement is nonrandom. Furthermore, three replacement policies for a random working time are proposed. Finally, age replacement policies for a parallel system with constant and random number of units are taken and their optimal policies are discussed.
